Energy Thought Leaders Build Energy Connections at Singapore International Energy Week 2014

More than 10,000 of the energy industry’s top leaders, representing businesses, governments and international organisations, and from over 60 countries, convened at the 7th annual Singapore International Energy Week (SIEW). Beginning 27 October and concluding today, this year’s theme of “Building Energy Connections” was a reflection of the growing interdependence of energy markets.
 
Over 20 partner conferences and exhibitions, roundtable discussions, and associated events, saw a vibrant exchange of ideas on key energy challenges and opportunities facing the world today.  This diverse range of events offered opportunities for networking, and provided a platform for deal-making and the showcasing of innovative energy solutions.
 
Some of the event highlights included:
 

  • Mr. S Iswaran, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office and Second Minister for Home Affairs and Trade & Industry kicked off SIEW 2014 with his opening remarks where he said that diversifying energy sources and enhancing access to secure and cost-competitive supplies were key parts of Singapore’s energy strategy
  • The SIEW Opening Keynote, where Dr. Leonhard Birnbaum, Member of the Board of Management – Markets, Services at E.ON explained the need for countries to implement economically sensible energy policies and navigate the “global energy transitions”
  • Masdar CEO Dr. Ahmad Belhoul spoke on the rising importance of renewable energy
  • The Singapore Energy Summit saw 25 high-level speakers, across five sessions, addressing the world’s most pressing energy challenges.  This includes the growing importance of regional connectivity in tackling energy challenges, the strategic importance of the energy mix, the potential of renewables, and the enabling role of technologies
  • The ASEAN-IEA Gas Dialogue, with Maria van der Hoeven, Executive Director of the International Energy Agency, discussing the IEA’s views of how the gas market in ASEAN would evolve
  • The Youth at SIEW programme, where over 250 students discussed Singapore’s energy future with Mr S Iswaran, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office and Second Minister for Home Affairs and Trade & Industry. The Minister also presented the inaugural Energy-Industry Scholarships to four students, before touring the Youth Energy Showcase of 18 sustainable energy projects
  • SIEW also featured partner events on key energy industry verticals including: the Asian Energy Financial and Investment Conference, Downstream & Petrochemical Asia, the Gas Asia Summit, the Platts Top 250 Asia Awards Dinner, the European Union Business Avenues Clean Technologies Exhibition, the RE@SIEW Exhibition and the Asia Clean Energy Summit
 
The week also saw several major announcements, including:
 
  • The formation of a S$25 million Energy Storage Programme by EMA to support the development and integration of large-scale, cost-effective systems for the Southeast Asian city-state’s power system;
  • A S$20 million Energy Training Fund set up by EMA to support the training needs of Singaporean workers in the power sector;
  • Various joint initiatives by EMA and Singapore Power to promote energy-efficiency and embark on a comprehensive rules review exercise to lower business costs.
