(BW)(FL-CAPLOW-CHILDREN'S)$1 Million Caplow Children's Prize Announced for Saving the Lives of Children

Miami, United States, Thursday, March 28, 2013 -- (Business Wire India) --

The winner of the Caplow Children's Prize will receive $1 million to save the lives of children under age five. The Prize is seeking applications from any person or organization worldwide. The entire application process can be completed online at www.childrensprize.org.

The rules to the Children's Prize are simple: Each applicant must propose a plan to save the lives of children who would otherwise die before age five. The lives to be saved must be in immediate danger, and the identity of the beneficiaries must be provided to the donor after the plan is carried out. Plans should balance credibility with the greatest number of lives to be saved within two years. The winner will receive US $1 million to execute their vision. All submitted materials must be in English.

"The death of a child is a universal tragedy," says engineer and entrepreneur Dr. Ted Caplow, creator of the Children's Prize, "and this contest strives to harness the power of the communications age to create new leverage for philanthropy in this area."

As a recent father of triplets, Dr. Caplow's journey through the world of fetal medicine had a deep impact on him. He and his wife welcomed their triplets at 34 weeks gestation with only minor complications, yet the babies still spent a combined total of two months in intensive care. Struck by the enormous concentration of resources - medical, financial, and human - that were drawn into the survival of these babies, Dr. Caplow decided to make child mortality his philanthropic focus.

In 2011, almost seven million children around the world died before their fifth birthday from preventable causes such as malaria, diarrhea, pneumonia, malnutrition, or infection. Prize applicants can include medical clinics, NGO's, municipalities, schools, scientists, doctors, community leaders, etc. Emerging online tools for social connectivity will play a critical role in selecting finalists and verifying results.

The Children's Prize will be accepting Entry Forms until May 1, 2013. The entry form and contest rules, together with video interviews of Dr. Caplow and further information, can be found at www.childrensprize.org. Judges for the Children's Prize include distinguished experts from University of Miami, Harvard University, Emory University and Ashoka Changemakers, among others.
