TERI in Association with Électricité de France Organises Workshop on "Large Scale Deployment of Smart Grid: Opportunities and Strategies"
Workshop Aimed at Identifying Opportunities for Smart Grids, in the Wake of Depleting Energy Resources and Enhancing Energy Access

New Delhi, Delhi, India, Tuesday, January 31, 2012 -- (Business Wire India) -- One of the major challenges faced by emerging economies, like India, is depleting conventional energy resources and enhancing energy access. Distributed generation together with application of smart grid solutions could help in addressing some of these challenges. Smart Grid not only manages the generation sources for optimum utilization but also allows consumers to participate in energy usage decisions by adopting latest digital technologies.

In the view of this, The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) and Électricité de France (EDF) organised a workshop today to strategise and tap the opportunities for large scale deployment of Smart Grids. Held in the sidelines of TERI's annual flagship event The Delhi Sustainable Development Summit, the workshop saw participation of experts from the regulatory commissions, public and private sector utilities, project developers, academia, and R&D institutions.

Talking about opportunities for renewable energy sources in smart grid, Dr Leena Srivastava, Executive Director, TERI & Acting Vice Chancellor, TERI University, said, "Smart grids are one of the technical options that can contribute in meeting the Millennium Development Goals and issues related to climate change".

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Sunil Felix, Nuclear Counsellor, French Embassy in India said, "Smart grid initiatives are absolutely crucial to ensure better grid reliability and stability for the consumers". He further added that deployment of smart grids would not only lead to reduction of greenhouse gas emissions but would also help in reducing the environmental impacts of energy."

Speaking on the occasion Ms. Claude Nahon, Senior Vice-President, Sustainable Development, EDF Group said, "If we want renewable energy sources to play a big role in our energy mix then we need to introduce some intelligence in the way we use them through smart grids."

Panelists discussed the huge potential for smart grid initiatives in the country and the challenges that are likely to be dealt with. Perceptions of smart grid may vary from user to user, thus it is important to identify and prioritize the same. Public acceptance is also an important requirement.
The workshop emphasised the need for disseminating the experience (both national and international) and offered a platform to discuss the emerging opportunities in the field of smart grids.

Crowcon's Gas Detectors Ensure Safe Operation at Oil and Gas Terminal in Rajasthan
100 Nimbus flameproof (Exd) detectors supplied Cairn Energy's Mangala processing facility

Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, Tuesday, January 31, 2012 -- (Business Wire India) -- 100 of Crowcon's Nimbus flameproof (Exd) hydrocarbon gas detectors have been installed at Cairn Energy's Mangala oil and gas processing terminal in Rajasthan, India. Supplied via Larson & Toubro, the Nimbus units are located at strategic locations throughout the facility and ensure the safety of workers and equipment by detecting elevated levels of flammable hydrocarbon gases.

"Hydrocarbon gas detectors are required by local legislation," commented Crowcon's Indian distributor, Mr Kishore Degwekar of Detection Instruments Pvt. Ltd. "Larsen and Toubro, our customer, purchased the Nimbus detectors as they are certified by the Indian Directorate General of Mines Safety".

Crowcon's Nimbus gas detectors have an excellent 10-year proven track record and, as well as having local certification, are also ATEX and UL certified. The detector is also assessed to the globally recognised functional safety standard IEC61508 and is suitable for use as part of SIL 2 systems.

Many thousands of Nimbus detectors are installed in locations across the globe, in all climatic conditions, such as the north of Sweden with its sub-zero winters, the deserts of Qatar, where summer temperatures can exceed 50oC and where sandstorms are common, and hot and very humid regions such as Malaysia.

It is used in all manner of locations, including underground tunnels, oil and gas rigs, oil and gas refineries, over-ground pipelines, compressor stations, turbine halls, pumping stations, sewage works, chemical works, aerosol filling plants, floating production ships (FPSO's) and power stations.

Designed to be integrated with existing gas detection systems, Nimbus can be used in conjunction with digital communication networks (via RS-485 Modbus) or conventional 4-20mA control systems such as Crowcon's Gasmonitor.

Rated to IP67, Nimbus functions in even the dirtiest conditions. The optics operate at up to 90% obscuration, with a dirty optics warning light activating at 75% obscuration. An external status light indicates whether the unit is in normal function or fault, alerts users to rising gas levels, and also identifies 22 further conditions for simple diagnosis.

About Cairn Energy's Mangala oil processing terminal

The Mangala processing terminal covers an area equivalent to 200 football pitches and includes oil, gas, power and water infrastructure. At an eventual length of 670 km, the pipeline will provide access to more than 75% of India's refining capacity. At the peak of construction, approximately 16,000 workers were involved: 5,000 on the pipeline and 11,000 on the processing terminal.

BWI: SMART Log Helping Fight Leaks for British Water Utility

Press release from Business Wire India
Source: Halma Water Management (HWM)
Tuesday, January 31, 2012 04:05 PM IST (10:35 AM GMT)
Editors: Business: Energy companies, Heavy industries, Water; Technology
--------------------------------------------------
SMART Log Helping Fight Leaks for British Water Utility

Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, Tuesday, January 31, 2012 -- (Business Wire India) -- A major project to fight leakage by British utility company Yorkshire Water is using HWM's Radio-Tech SMART Log wireless datalogging automatic meter reader (AMR) to significantly reduce the time and cost taken to find and fix leaks in the network. The SMART Logs are being installed by Vernon Morris & Co. Ltd. along with its Incertameter 'bolt-on' in-line flow meter, enabling Yorkshire Water to split 250 of its existing DMAs* in half for more efficient water management - without the need for constructing any new, expensive metered bypasses. The initial phase includes 350 installations, with more planned to follow as the project rolls out across the network.

Dividing a water mains network into DMAs is current water loss prevention best practice. It allows water companies to examine their network in small pieces, narrowing down areas where water is being lost so that leakage teams can then pinpoint the location within that DMA. Obviously, smaller DMAs result in more detailed initial information, and proportionally less time taken to identify the exact position of the leak; in these cases time equals not only money but also water, personnel and the chances of a severe service disruption.

SMART Log and Incertameter allow for the easy and very cost-effective creation of more and smaller DMAs, and very rapid collection of data from them. SMART Log's wireless technology means that data collection teams no longer need access to the meter itself, but instead can download the data via a secure wireless link from up to 100 meters away - even from a moving vehicle. This drastically reduces the time taken for data gathering, which, in addition to the use of smaller DMAs, results in impressive savings.

In a series of blind pilot trials conducted last year to compare the before and after effects of the project, results indicated an average saving per leak of roughly 60 hours of detection time and over £1500, even without factoring in the initial saving of £5000+ per sub-metering point created. Leakage inspectors can expect to cover a DMA approximately five times faster than before, and prioritise their leak repair activities much more effectively according to the severity of a leak and its impact on the water supply.

Advanced technology not only enables this level of functional efficiency, but has resulted in an impressive battery life for the systems. Batteries last for 5 years with a 5 minute sample rate, meaning that the time and cost savings first made at the installation continue on for half a decade. The SMART Log technology has already seen extended use in Scotland and England over the last few years, both in conjunction with the Incertameter and as a standalone AMR or commercial datalogger, and has consistently proved itself a valuable tool in improving a project's operational functionality and underlying efficiency.

BWI: New Salvo™ Control Panel+ Improves Operational Performance and Installation Time

Press release from Business Wire India
Source: Castell
Tuesday, January 31, 2012 04:10 PM IST (10:40 AM GMT)
Editors: General: Environment; Business: Energy companies, Heavy industries; Technology
--------------------------------------------------
New SalvoT Control Panel+ Improves Operational Performance and Installation Time

Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, Tuesday, January 31, 2012 -- (Business Wire India) -- Castell has launched a new control panel for its Salvo range of drive-away prevention products. Suitable for use with automatic and manual loading bay doors, Salvo Control Panel+ (SCP+) is easier both to use and install.

Fast, safe access is an important issue in the loading bay environment. The Salvo system, as reported by existing users, already delivers operating efficiencies in terms of visually indicating loading bay availability, reducing needless waiting time and confirming the presence of trucks ready for loading or unloading. The new SCP+ increases operational efficiency still further with the addition of an illuminated lock; in 24/7 operating environments this feature helps drivers locate the lock portion faster and therefore saves time.

Since Salvo is a global product, with installations across five continents, the operating instructions on the SCP+ have been redesigned to allow understanding regardless of local language. The instructions are now entirely visual, enabling drivers to follow them on the panel, and reducing the time taken by new drivers to understand and operate the system.

The safety function of the control panel has also been enhanced and now features forcibly guided safety relays that deliver a higher level of safety functionality.

SCP+ has also been designed for simpler installation. A new ergonomic enclosure allows for fast access to the electrical terminals and reduces wiring time. As a further development, SCP+ is also multi-voltage and suitable for 24V AC, 24V DC, 110V AC or 230V AC supply. Finally, the panel has been designed using the same footprint and so can be retrofitted easily.

To combat environmental temperatures ranging from the extreme highs of Africa to the biting colds of North America and Russia, SCP+ can be fitted with an internal heater.

David Hughes, Castell's sales director, commented: "The new SCP+ is a key development in the Salvo range. The increased levels of functionality have been developed in conjunction with our blue-chip global customers. These features will deliver even higher returns on investment, both in terms of safety and operational efficiency, and further enhance our reputation for providing systems that deliver fast, safe access."

BWI: Steria becomes first IT Services organisation in India to conduct TMMi eSurveys

Press release from Business Wire India
Source: Steria

Steria becomes first IT Services organisation in India to conduct TMMi eSurveys

Noida, Uttar Pradesh; Chennai, Tamil Nadu; Pune, Maharashtra, India, Tuesday, January 31, 2012 -- (Business Wire India) -- Steria India partners with Experimentus to become among the first organisations in India to offer Test Maturity Model Integrated (TMMi) e-surveys.

Steria India, a leading provider of IT enabled business services, and Experimentus, the software quality management consulting firm, today announced a strategic partnership to service the growing needs of the Testing and Quality Assurance (QA) community in India.

This follows the launch of the three part Steria RightTestingTM service in February which helps clients identify the critical risk and quick-win opportunities in testing operations and improve quality, enhancing Steria's existing Consultancy offering.

This partnership will streamline the development process, helping Steria customers to identify the strengths and weaknesses across the full software development life cycle, challenging the traditional testing model. This will highlight issues that need to be addressed in setup to ensure the best products and services are brought to market.

TMMi has become a well respected industry acclaimed standard against which organisations can measure and improve software testing and quality related processes as well as benchmark their level of maturity. The e-surveys are already used by financial services, telecommunications, media, retail and healthcare organisations in continental Europe, UK, Singapore and India.

Dr. Mukesh Aghi, CEO, Asia Pacific, of Steria said "India is a growing market so it is great to see that both the IT community and Indian organisations have started to understand the value of an independent third party testing gateway testing service. Businesses are constantly on the look out to find ways to improve their internal testing functions and Steria India can provide a quick view into the maturity of testing functions. We are already talking a lot about it to our customers and prospects and they are very excited to get their testing functions assessed to TMMi maturity levels."

Customers want to know where they stand today and want help in deciding where they can go tomorrow. Ultimately, it is about optimising cost by doing things the right way and making sure that the offerings that are brought to market are the best they can be.

Julian Clarke, director of sales and marketing at Experimentus commented, "We are delighted to be working with Steria India and making the TMMi e-Survey available to the Indian market. Many organisations have previously used TMMi to independently measure and identify improvements in their own test and quality capabilities but more recently we have seen TMMi become part of the evaluation criteria when selecting a supplier which has driven the need for formal TMMi Certification. As a first step towards Improvement or Certification we developed our TMMi e-Survey solution to help quickly identify areas for improvement and provide those organisations wanting formal certification with an informal but useful indication of their maturity level."

London, United Kingdom, Tuesday, January 31, 2012 -- (Business Wire India) -- To mark 6 months to go to the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games, the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) has today announced that the under 16s Volunteer Performer Cast for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Opening and Closing Ceremonies will be selected from schools in the six Host Boroughs in the Get Set Network, part of the official London 2012 education programme and incorporating the Olympic and Paralympic Values into their curriculum.

18 primary and 7 secondary schools in the six Host Boroughs have been involved in an audition process for the London 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony involving children aged 7-9 years and 11-13 years. In total 1,650 children auditioned for the London 2012 Ceremonies Mass Movement Team, undertaking large scale choreography as well as dance routines. More than 900 children will be selected over the coming weeks to perform in the Opening Ceremony on July 27th 2012, watched by 80,000 people in the Olympic Stadium and a worldwide TV audience of over a billion people.

For the selected children there will be between 15 and 20 rehearsals taking place initially at the selected schools, then in East London at London 2012 Ceremonies rehearsal sites and finally in the Olympic Stadium. LOCOG is providing transport between the schools and the rehearsal venues for the young people.

Seb Coe, London 2012 Chair, said: 'Being part of the Ceremonies is a great way of inspiring young people, I'm delighted school children from the Host Boroughs will be part of show and help tell our story to world. The students involved will have an incredible experience which will build their confidence and a sense of pride in themselves, their friends, family, school and wider community.'

Boris Johnson, Mayor of London, said: 'We want to create a legacy from the Games by inspiring our young people and ensuring they are at the heart of the celebrations. Not only are we giving young Londoners free tickets to watch the spectacle of sport, hundreds of youngsters will have a once in a lifetime opportunity to actually take part in the biggest event on the planet, watched by millions of people around the world.'

Sandie Dawe, Chief Executive at VisitBritain said: "With only six months to go until the opening ceremony of London 2012, we are ramping up our public relations and marketing activity across the world. While the lighting of the cauldron to mark the beginning of the Olympic Games is a highly anticipated moment, we recognise it is also a time when four billion viewers around the globe will turn their attention to London - and Britain. This is our chance to shine. An opportunity for every village, town and city in the land to play its part in ensuring we make London 2012 much more than a great sporting event, turning this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity into something that will have long-term benefits for tourism across the whole of the UK and help secure economic growth in the future."

Schools from the six Host Boroughs will be auditioning in February for the London 2012 Olympic Closing Ceremony. More details on selection of schools within the six Host Boroughs for the London 2012 Paralympic Opening and Closing Ceremonies will be announced at a later date.

School quotes:

Barking and Dagenham - All Saints College, Kerry Tabb
"All Saints pupils have been living the Olympic dream in the run up to the London 2012 Games. Pupils have been involved in a range of Olympic themed activities around the school and across the curriculum. In particular pupils involvement in the Get Set Network has produced some inspiring stories about how the Olympics are going to live on even after the all events have finished, the athletes, supporters and visitors have left. Pupils are also leaving their own comments about the lead of the Games and how it will affect them in the future.

Pupils here at All Saints feel privileged to have already had a taste of some of the test events that have been happening at the Olympic site and have used this to pursue an interest in some of the other sports that they will see at the Games. The introduction of Handball at our school has taken off quicker than Usain Bolt and we now have a Handball club on a Friday after school which involves inter form competitions.

Staff and pupils at All Saints feel overwhelmed by our involvement in such an amazing and once in a lifetime opportunity. Pupils at the school will benefit so much from the chance to represent not only our school but our Borough at this unique opportunity. A real sense of pride will be felt by all."

Greenwich - Crown Woods College, Julie Taylor
"Crown Woods College pupils are delighted to have been offered the once in a lifetime opportunity to participate in the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games. The excitement amongst the pupils is palpable as they wait to hear about the next step in the process. It has been my aim for the pupils to have a real sense of involvement in the Games and it couldn't have happened in a more dramatic way! We have used ideas and resources from the Get Set network over the last couple of years to raise the profile of the Games across the College, not only in PE lessons but across the whole curriculum. This summer will be a very exciting one for Londoners and it is very fitting that our young people really feel they are a part of that. Our new Sports Centre is called the 2012 Centre and our pupils are extremely proud to be included in this world class event."

Hackney - Skinners Academy, Jenny Wilkins (Head)
"The Skinners' Academy is committed to inspiring our students to become involved with all aspects of the London 2012 Olympic Games. We are excited and honoured to have been selected to participate in the London 2012 Opening Ceremony. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity which will be fantastic for our students and will be one that students, staff and parents alike will always remember!"

Newham - Colegrave Primary, Katie Parks
"Colegrave Primary School feel privileged to be part of the London 2012 Opening Ceremony. What an amazing opportunity - we're proud beyond words and excited beyond belief! Bring on the games!"

Tower Hamlets - Marner Primary, Mary Todd (Head)
"When we first signed up to the Get Set network, we had no idea that we might have the chance to be involved in the Olympic Opening Ceremony. It is such a huge opportunity for our children and staff and will bring the Olympics alive for the whole of the school community. We are a school that celebrates sport and sporting achievement and so the Olympics are hugely important to us. To have them taking place just down the road and having such direct involvement is a rare and wonderful opportunity!"

Waltham Forest - Heathcote Secondary, Aiden McCarney
"Following our successful involvement in the London 2012 Get Set education programme we are delighted to announce that some of the students from Year 7 & 8 at Heathcote School have been invited to take part in the Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games. The 40 chosen students auditioned twice for this prestigious honour and will be rehearsing extensively from now until July. The students are extremely excited to be part of this wonderful occasion and are very grateful for the chance to be part of such an unique global event, allowing them a once in a life time opportunity to be involved with the Olympic Games."

New Delhi, Delhi, India, Tuesday, January 31, 2012 -- (Business Wire India) -- The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) in association with the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organisation (NEDO), Japan organised a conference today titled 4th India Japan Energy Forum - Business opportunities in Energy Efficiency and Renewables. The conference focussed on technological options for enhancing energy efficiency and promoting renewable energy technologies.

The Forum provided an excellent opportunity for Indian and Japanese industries to dialogue, debate and share their experiences. The conference envisaged capitalisation of cross-learnings thus ensuring mutual benefits and promotion of bilateral relations between the two nations.

The forum saw high-level officials from government and industries from both India and Japan. Those present included Dr R K Pachauri, Director-General, TERI, Mr Hideo Hato, President, NEDO, Mr Hiroshi Asahi, Director-General for Energy and Environmental Policy, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), Japan, Mr BK Chaturvedi, Member, Planning Commission, Government of India, Mr Hiroshi Asahi, Director General for Energy and Environmental Policy, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (MET), Japan, Mr Amitabh Kant, CEO and MD, Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor Development Corporations, Mr Gireesh B. Pradhan, Secretary, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Government of India, Dr Ajay Mathur, Director General, Bureau of Energy Efficiency, Ministry of Power, Government of India Mr Satoshi Miura, Director, Energy Conservation and Renewable Energy Department, Agency for Natural Resources and Energy, METI, Japan among many others.

The demand for energy is growing in both the countries; hence, we need major initiatives for energy efficiency and work towards making energy accessible. One of the ways to tackle this problem is to improve energy efficiency especially in the transport and infrastructure sectors."

Emphasising the need for an energy secure sustainable model of growth, Mr Hideo Hato, President, NEDO said, "Combining the efforts of industry, government and academia and leveraging established international research networks, Japan and India are committed to contributing to the energy and global environmental problems and further enhance global industrial competitiveness. The enhancement of the two countries industrial competiveness and the need to address energy and global environmental problems are paramount, hence today's forum will be a major path-breaker towards achieving the common goals."

Speaking on the need to improve the accessibility of clean energy, Mr BK Chaturvedi, Member, Planning Commission, Government of India, said, "India needs to plan for energy efficiently, as still a large body of our population still doesn't have access to clean energy. Planning Commission is making its next 12th five-year plan, and we have simultaneously planned for energy requirements, primarily power. Deliberations today will surely help improve us in the Planning Commission, for the betterment of the country."

Expressing his delight to represent the Japanese government at this important event organised by TERI and NEDO, Mr Hiroshi Asahi, Director General for Energy and Environmental Policy, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (MET), Japan, said "Energy consumption in both India and Japan has been a major challenge and both the countries need to focus on energy conservation, renewable energy, including efficiency in buildings. Through this forum I am sure that we would be able to come out with concrete set of actions to promote global development in industrial efficiency as well as to accumulate new knowledge and know-how on business operations and technology transfer."

Addressing the delegates, Mr Amitabh Kant, CEO and MD, Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor Development Corporations, said, "According to a UN estimate by 2030, 70% of India's population would live in cities. Hence it is of utmost importance to walk in the steps of sustainable development, using technology to make a quantum jump for growth. This is certainly an urban century and there will be a huge requirement for infrastructure development in the future."

The first three editions of the Forum held in December 2006, February 2008 and February 2010 focused on national energy policies, energy conservation, and climate change and technology co-operation. All these Forums facilitated an exchange of ideas and best practices between policy makers, business communities, technocrats and academicians.

Corporates, global leaders and thinkers alike believe that to find cost-effective sustainable solutions to the ever-increasing energy needs, businesses and governments world over should get together and chalk out sustainable innovative methods of doing business.

The one-day event deliberated upon various aspects related to energy efficiency and renewable energy with a focus on solar energy.

While, India has over the past few decades emerged as one of the fastest growing economies in the world and is also home to the second largest population, Japan is the third largest oil consumer in the world, behind the US and China, and one of the largest importers of crude oil, liquefied natural gas (LNG) and coal, hence it is of utmost importance for both the countries to walk on the path of sustainable development and find out ways for maximum utilisation of renewable energy.

The forum provided a platform for Indian and Japanese stakeholders to discuss various technological and policy related issues in the field of energy efficiency and renewable energy.

The speakers at the Forum included representatives from METI, NEDO, BEE, MNRE, TERI and many other experts and industry leaders.

MWH Contributes $50,000 USD to Help Bring Solar Lighting to Rural India
The donation supports The Energy and Resources Institute's (TERI) Lighting a Billion Lives program giving non-polluting & reliable solar lighting to about 2,500 villagers and reducing CO2 emissions by 750 tonnes over the solar lantern's useful life of 10 years

Broomfield, Colorado, United States, Tuesday, January 31, 2012 -- (Business Wire India) -- MWH Global, a sustainable engineering company, today announced a $50,000 USD donation to The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), an India-based, non-profit research organization focused on finding solutions for critical energy, environmental and sustainable development issues. The funds will directly support TERI's Lighting a Billion Lives program that aims to bring light into the lives of rural communities through solar lighting.

In India alone, 61 million rural households use kerosene and wicker lamps for lighting. Inadequate lighting has a direct impact on the livelihood, health, environment and safety of these rural residents. Lighting a Billion Lives, a program that launched in 2008, sets up a solar charging station in energy poor villages and offers certified, bright and quality solar lanterns for rent to the local community. Each village charging station is managed and operated by a local entrepreneur who leases the lanterns to village residents for an affordable fee, creating opportunities for renewable energy education and entrepreneurship in the villages.

The donation supports the multi-faceted climate change commitment program MWH developed through its partnership with the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) in 2007 to advocate for sustainable practices, reduce energy use and greenhouse gas emissions and educate young people in our communities on the water cycle, energy use and climate change. It is estimated that the MWH donation will help create renewable energy infrastructure for 13 villages in rural India, giving non-polluting and reliable solar lighting to about 2,500 villagers and reducing CO2 emissions by 750 tonnes over the solar lantern's useful life of 10 years further expanding the firm's commitment to sustainability and renewable energy projects. TERI has also committed to CGI to implement innovative solutions to some of the world's most pressing challenges, including climate change.

The contribution to the Lighting a Billion Lives program was made through the MWH Caring Foundation, Inc. The foundation was established in 2002 to fund charitable and educational causes that align with the MWH purpose of Building a Better World.
"Our purpose of Building a Better World is inherent in the way we do business and help the communities where our employees work and live," said Alan Krause, president and CEO of MWH. "MWH and our MWH Caring Foundation are proud to support and partner with organizations like TERI that leave a lasting impact on people and the planet."

To date, the MWH Caring Foundation has donated $800,000 USD to charitable organizations. Previous donations include the Queensland Premier's Flood Relief Appeal in Australia the Armed Forces Foundation, Water for People, and President's Relief Fund for Earthquake Victims in Pakistan, among others.

Our Cable landing Station in Mumbai is ready for operations, making Sify the first ICT company in India to own a cable landing station for international submarine cable systems. With the opening of this landing station, Gulf Bridge International (GBI) became the first to land their sub-sea cable system in India.

Sify also signed a Landing Party Agreement (LPA) with MENA Submarine Cable System S.A.E, a licensed telecommunications operator in Egypt. This Cable Landing Station positions Sify well for the growing opportunities for ICT and cloud services across the world.

In early 2011, Sify had announced a strategic investment in Europe India Gateway (EIG) cable capacities to support our expanding global operations across Europe, Middle East and Africa. We are happy to share that the EIG cable has gone live up to Europe this quarter. A US $700 million high-capacity fiber-optic cable, EIG will be the first, direct, high-bandwidth optical fiber system from the UK to India.

The State Data Centre for Kerala has gone live, making it our second on-stream State Data Centre out of a total of five we have won to-date. We are looking at consistent recurring revenues from these State Data Centres for the next 5 years.

Our strategy to drive Network, IT Services and Software as a complete portfolio of services to Enterprise customers in India and International markets, is allowing us to better capitalise our skills and service offerings.

Consistent with our strategy to develop solutions for the large and growing SMB segment, our Commercial and Consumer business continues to expand their market share in both small and medium enterprises and SOHO businesses. As targeted, most of the growth is coming from Tier II and III cities. In addition to our portfolio of network and internet services to the SMB market, we have introduced value-added IT services tailored to this market, such as Sify mystorage, our automatic backup and storage service for SOHO and SMBs.

Horizontal expansion of the services basket is also yielding good dividends for the Software services helped largely due to the demand for automation of services, both from the government and allied bodies.

Both the Central and State governments are pursuing an agenda of digitizing existing records, building a central storage repository and augmenting connectivity and going forward, we should see more opportunities emerging for our products and services."

Mr. MP Vijay Kumar, Chief Financial Officer, said, "The Company remains focussed on optimising cost and cash flow with operating cash flow continuing to be positive.

Cash balance at the end of the quarter was INR 658 million and undrawn line of credit stood at INR 335 million.

Our investments in EIG and our Cable Landing Station in Mumbai should see cash generation soon.
